Mylar® Ultrahigh-Frequency Driver

The JBL L830 takes sound into the high-definition world by incorporating an ultra-high frequency driver capable of reproducing frequencies out past 40kHz. Why is this important? That’s the realm of high-definition audio and the frequency response of today’s high-resolution sources such as Blu-ray Disc.™ Made of Mylar, this UHF driver is loaded into a patented JBL Bi-Radial® horn so that high frequencies have a wide and uniform dispersion, which means smooth high-frequency sound over a large listening area. The L830 will deliver a more realistic sound experience.

The Studio L830's titanium tweeter
is both strong and light weight

The Studio L830's woofer delivers bass
effortlessly and with maximum impact

Straight-Line Signal Path Networks

The most direct path for producing the cleanest, most accurate sound possible is in a straight line. JBL uses Straight-line Signal Path Networks in the Studio L830s to ensure that the signal from the 5-way binding posts all the way through to the transducers is the most direct signal path possible. Add heavy-duty bypass capacitors and an audiophile 3-way crossover design and the result is a clear, accurate signal no matter what the volume. So turn it up. The L830s are perfect for demanding music and movie soundtracks.

1-Inch Pure-Titanium Tweeter

When it comes to reproducing all of the high frequencies in your favorite movie or song, the L830 uses technology straight from the recording studio. The JBL L830 features a 1-inch pure-titanium-dome tweeter; titanium’s strength and light weight make it perfect for quickly and accurately reproducing high frequencies without strain or distortion. Titanium is the material of choice for many JBL professional music monitors, and the L830 is based on our professional models. And a patented JBL EOS waveguide ensures that high frequencies will have a wide and uniform dispersion, which results in smooth high-frequency sound over a large listening area. You’ll hear the detail in your music and movies as you’ve never heard it before.

The Studio LC2 uses heavy duty capacitors
and an audiophile grade crossovers

6-Inch PolyPlas™ Woofers

The JBL brand name is synonymous with bass. The L830 uses a patented JBL PolyPlas™ driver material for the woofer cone. PolyPlas material has both strength and a light weight, so bass is reproduced effortlessly and with maximum impact. To make sure that the bass is not affected by any unwanted resonances, the L830 uses a JBL IsoPower™ baffle design, and rigid enclosures. The result? Tight, accurate bass, worthy of the world’s best recording studios.

5Amazing sound, fantastic clarity, huge speakers!
By Tony G.
There are no reviews for these speakers yet, so I wanted to write one that will hopefully be useful to other people interested in purchasing the JBL L830's. I purchased these speakers as an upgrade to an existing Onkyo HTIB system I have owned for over a year. While my existing system was already very good, I noticed that during most movies the dialogue was difficult to hear and other sounds were somewhat muddied. I knew when purchasing the HTIB that the speakers included with the set were sub-par, and I had intended to upgrade at some point.

I researched many different brands and speaker types before deciding on the JBL Studio L series. I looked at JBL's cheaper line, the Venue series, but I decided that I wanted to go with the higher end Studio series for a few dollars more. I purchased these L830's for my front L/R and paired them with the LC1 center channel speaker.

The difference in sound compared to my small Onkyo speakers is tremendous. It wasn't until I hooked these speakers up that I noticed how bad my original speakers sounded. The L830's provide a crystal clear sound that is very neutral, and they can drive a decent amount of bass as well, allowing my sub to really focus on the lowest frequencies. My amp is rated at 95 watts a channel, and it seems like the L830's aren't even breaking a sweat even when I crank the volume. It's nice to know there is a lot of untapped power in these speakers, even though I'm not planning to upgrade my amp anytime soon.

Visually, these speakers are beautifully crafted and look very nice. The solid wood construction is very attractive, and the fronts look very cool and modern without the grills on. I was tempted to leave them off but the wife didn't feel the same, so they still look good with flat black grills on the front.

A couple of other things to note... first of all, these speakers are HUGE! They are listed as bookshelf speakers, but they are gigantic and pretty heavy. Not the best match for a flat panel or wall mounted system, and they are probably too deep to fit on most wall-mounted shelves. They work best if you have a deep entertainment center or built-ins with counter tops like I do. Even using speaker stands with these might be tough if they'll be in a high traffic area. Secondly, they are intended to match up with the LC1 center. If you are upgrading your surround system like me and will end up with a mix of these and other lesser speaker models, I would recommend at least getting the LC1 or LC2 to go with it. In my case, these arrived a day before my LC1, and I hooked them up while still using my old Onkyo center. Doing so made it go from difficult to impossible to hear any dialogue in tv or movies. These speakers absolutely overshadowed all other speakers in my setup. Even with recalibrating my amp it was difficult to hear the other channels since these pumped out so much sound. I'm sure most people reading this already know better, but I wanted to at least call it out. Lastly, if you have trouble finding them for a reasonable price, check out a popular online auction site and you might be able to score them direct from the manufacturer at a ridiculously low price if you're patient. Amazon has good deals too, but I'm just saying that it pays to check around. I've seen them go for as low as $140, so at that point you're barely paying more than for a set of Arenas.

All in all, I love these speakers and the amazing sound they deliver. I am sure that some audiophiles will say they can't perform like some of the super high-end speakers out there that cost in the $1,000's, but for their price range I feel you are getting a fantastic and superior sound that can turn most any average system into near-audiophile quality.

5Crystal clear, strong mids and deep bass
By A. Light
I put these on speaker stands in my master bedroom. Hooked up to my Harmon Kardon AV receiver it is crystal clear, has clean mid-range and the bass is more than adequate. I envisioned needing a subwoofer, but after hearing movies and music I see no need for it. If you are going for wall shaking bass add a sub to the mix. I have a system like that in the entertainment room.

They are beutiful in the cherry finish. I am sure the ashe is as well.

My wife does not like exposed speakers generally, but these are so nice looking she said they make our room more beautiful.

It has a rear baffle so you can't put them right against the wall. Placement 6 - 10 inches away form the wall makes them sing.

They are great.

5Try it you just might like it.
By Dan W. Mann
Well being the first review on the cherry model I will try to provide enough info. to make it informative while not being too full of "tech you knees".

First impression - they are heavy! The box containing both speakers weighed over fifty pounds. Bet ya I am on the UPS guys deliver last list now. The speakers weigh 22 pounds apiece which usually bodes well.

Appearance - nice. No vinyl and the wood veneer is finished well. One thing you do not notice in the picture is the sides are actually panels added to the main box very much like the Polk LSCI series which is not only eye catching but increases stability.

Quick look inside. Completely insulated, wiring done with thick wire, and internal braces large. JBL did a first class job in not cuttting any corners.

Now for the main event! How do they sound. Bi-wired them to a Pioneer Elite 84, did the set up and sat back. At first a little bright but not to worry you need to break in new electronics. Fast forward three days.....

The best thing about these speakers is nothing. Huh you say. They simply reproduce the sound spectrum accurately. Imaging and seperation is excellant with a wide sound stage. I bought these for my bedroom set-up to replace a pair of Polk Monitor 40s which are good speakers with most sounds but which seemed to stumble a little when hit with a full blast of symphony instruments seeming to lose a couple in transition while the JBLs reproduced the full range. Voices are clear, individual instruments distinct, doesn't wear your ears out and bass for a bookshelf is not bad.

While not quite as accurate as the Polk Rti 10s in my main set-up they work well and it would be hard to find a bookshelf that would put the Ls to shame.

Overall good construction, easy on the eyes, and pumps out some good sounds. Only downside is that if you decide to really rock the house they seem to lose a little something right below nose bleed level.
